World of Tanks Beginner Guide: Your First Ten Battles and Beyond
FIRST 10 BATTLES World of Tanks throws new players into a 15-versus-15 battle with very little hand-holding. The good news: a handful of core habits will carry you through the early tiers and make every later tank easier to play. This guide covers the fundamentals.
The five vehicle classes
Every tank belongs to one of five classes, and each has a distinct job on the battlefield.
| Class | Main role | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light tank | Scouting and spotting | Speed, view range, camouflage | Thin armor, low damage |
| Medium tank | Flexible flanker | Mobility and balanced firepower | Limited armor |
| Heavy tank | Frontline pusher | Thick armor and hit points | Slow, poor concealment |
| Tank destroyer | Sniper or ambusher | High damage per shot | Weak in close, open fights |
| Artillery (SPG) | Indirect fire support | Damage from a distance | Vulnerable and slow to aim |
Try several classes in the early tiers. The first few tiers are cheap, forgiving, and a great place to find what suits you.
Understanding the basics of combat
Penetration and armor
A shell only damages a tank if it penetrates the armor at the point it hits. Aim at weak spots: the lower front plate on some tanks, the sides, the rear, and the thin roof. The ammunition type matters too. Standard AP is your default, premium rounds often penetrate more, and HE is useful against light armor or when you simply cannot pierce a target.
Angling your armor
Presenting your armor at an angle makes shells travel through more effective metal, and may cause them to ricochet. Heavy tanks should rarely face enemies perfectly flat. A small turn of the hull often turns a lethal hit into a bounce.
Hull-down and cover
Tanks with strong turret armor and good gun depression can hide their hull behind a ridge and show only the turret. This is called playing hull-down, and it is one of the most powerful skills in the game.
Reading the battle
- Look at the minimap constantly. It shows where your team is concentrated and where enemies were last spotted.
- Pick a flank and stay with your team. A lone tank that charges ahead usually dies for nothing.
- Do not stand still in the open. Use cover whenever you are reloading.
- Shoot when you can win the trade. Time your shots for when the enemy is reloading.
Spotting and camouflage
You can only shoot what you or an ally can see. Spotted enemies appear to the whole team. Light tanks live for this role, but any tank benefits from keeping its distance from bushes and understanding view range. Hiding in foliage makes you harder to spot, but firing reveals you for a short time.
Credits, experience, and economy
You earn credits and experience after every battle, with bonuses for damage, assisting teammates, and winning. Some key points:
- Credits buy new tanks, ammunition, and consumables.
- Experience is earned per tank and unlocks modules and the next vehicle in the line.
- Free experience is a shared pool that can be spent on any research, helpful for skipping a poor tank.
- Premium account speeds up earnings, but it is optional.
Do not rush to the highest tier. Playing each tank until its modules are fully researched, known as playing it βstock to elite,β makes it much more capable.
Crew, equipment, and consumables
Every tank has a crew whose skills improve as they gain experience. Early on, the first skill you pick matters. Many players choose Sixth Sense, which alerts you when you have been spotted, or Repairs for faster track fixing. Equipment slots add passive bonuses like improved optics or gun handling. Consumables, such as repair kits, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers, are used during battle and are well worth carrying on tanks you enjoy.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Driving straight at the enemy base alone.
- Hiding at the spawn and never contributing.
- Firing at tanks you cannot penetrate instead of changing target or ammo.
- Ignoring the minimap and getting flanked.
- Selling tanks too quickly. Many early vehicles are useful later for missions and events.
A simple plan for your first ten battles
- Pick one tank line and play it for a few sessions.
- In each battle, stay near allies and pick one lane.
- Focus on spotting and damage rather than kills.
- After each loss, review where you died and why.
- Experiment with a different class to see what feels natural.
Wrapping up
World of Tanks rewards patience, map awareness, and understanding armor. Do not worry about win rate early on. Learn angles, learn when to retreat, and keep your tank alive for one more shot. The rest will follow with practice.
