War Thunder Ground Lineups: Battle Rating and Backup Planning

LINEUP BUILDER
By Marcus Vance • 7 min read

Build a lineup, not a favorite vehicle

Ground battles reward players who can contribute more than once and adapt. A lineup is the vehicles you bring into battle; include complementary roles where possible: a main tank, a faster flanker or scout, an anti-air option, and perhaps an aircraft if you use aviation effectively. The right combination depends on nation, research, mode, and skill.

Battle Rating (BR) is used in matchmaking, and the lineup’s relevant rating affects the range of opponents. The exact system can be updated, so check current game explanations. Compare ratings of vehicles you plan to spawn. One favorite at a much higher BR may pull weaker supporting vehicles into more demanding matches.

Match roles to maps and objectives

Vehicle strengths depend on context. A light tank may capture points, scout, or flank; an armored vehicle may hold a lane; a tank destroyer may control a firing line; anti-air can protect teammates from aircraft. No role is mandatory in every match, but alternatives reduce the chance that one counter defeats your whole lineup.

Bring vehicles researched and equipped enough to perform. A strong vehicle without key modifications or a suitable crew may be less dependable than a familiar, prepared option.

Think about spawn points

Spawn points are earned during the match and used to deploy vehicles and aircraft. Costs and eligibility vary by mode, vehicle, and current rules. Before taking an expensive aircraft or specialized vehicle, ask whether it fits the battle and whether you have a useful follow-up. Spawning without checking the map can waste a vehicle and leave the team short of ground support.

A backup can provide another spawn in some modes, but does not replace a lineup. Learn which vehicles you can deploy with current points and whether a second spawn makes sense. If your first vehicle is lost early, choose a follow-up that addresses the threat: anti-air against aircraft, mobile capture when objectives are open, or a strong tank to defend a lane.

Research lineups with intention

When researching a branch, consider what vehicle fills a lineup gap. A new vehicle may have a different BR and require support around it. Researching several vehicles with complementary roles can provide flexibility, while neglecting a class can leave the lineup vulnerable. Crew training takes time and resources, so plan which crews will operate important vehicles.

Do not rush up in BR simply because a new vehicle unlocked. Test drive it, review ammunition and modifications, and ensure compatible support vehicles. A balanced lineup at a comfortable rating can be more productive than a top vehicle without an effective second spawn.

Adjust after each match

Review performance. Did you lack mobility, anti-air, or a way to handle heavy armor? Were you repeatedly spawning into a lost objective? Change one slot at a time and observe. Account for map rotation: a close-range vehicle may excel in a city but struggle on open terrain.

A good lineup is not a fixed tier-list recipe. It is practical options at a coherent BR, operated by crews you understand. Choose role coverage, learn spawn costs, and retain flexibility to respond to the battle rather than forcing every match through one vehicle.

Make a purchase plan

Researching a vehicle is only one part of adding it to a lineup. Check the Silver Lions needed for purchase, crew assignment, qualification, and modifications. If buying the new unlock leaves no funds for the rest of your line, delay it and keep playing a prepared lineup. This is especially useful for free-to-play players, whose research may move faster than their Silver Lions supply.

Before queuing, select vehicles that fit together and verify their ammunition. A lineup with a main tank, a mobile option, and a situational counter gives you decisions after the opening engagement. You can still specialize later; early flexibility makes it easier to learn how different maps and opponents change the value of each vehicle.
